From the end of So Long, and Thanks For All The Fish, the fourth book in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy.

Arthur and Fenchurch trek to see God’s Final Message to His Creation, written in fire in letters thirty feet high on the far side of the Quentulus Quazgar Mountains (not the top, whoops.) They find Marvin, the chronically depressed robot, who is finally dying, being many times older than the universe thanks to time travel shenanigans. They bring him along, but he can’t read it because his eyes are going, so they help him to the coin telescope (not binoculars, whoops. OK, that was deliberate because it was easier to draw letters fitting in that shape). He reads the Message and dies, maybe content for the only time in his life.
